About + Process
Hi! I’m Alyssa and I draw the natural world for people who want to bring the feeling of that little, hidden mushroom into the place that they call home. As an artist and an environmentalist, I am passionate about supporting and protecting the health and diversity of our world’s ecosystems.
I spend my days learning about our landscapes and the communities that exist inside of them (to some might say an obsessive level), because I love the beauty and magic I can find there.
And I want to share it with you.
So, as I’ve built Drawn to Ecology, a purposefully planned business that will allow me to support my family while protecting our ecosystems by providing you with an ecologically designed and sustainably manufactured product, that supports small local businesses like me!
What do I mean by this? Let me show you!
I work with small local businesses to manufacture the products in my shop. Working with them allows me to spend time dreaming up designs, working with clients or park partners on custom illustrations and creating original art collections like 'Lost in the Woods' Collection.
The main reason I choose to work with small local manufacturers is because it is a relationship, not just a business transaction. Working with them means I get to know them, I get to know the way they manufacture, the materials they use, how their employees are treated, and more often than not I get to know them as a friend. This allows for a very different conversation about how to make sure Drawn to Ecology products are as sustainable as possible.
Why is that so important?
Because the more research I do into the sustainability of the raw materials, manufacturing, and shipping of the products the less research you have to do as a consumer!
Another reason I work with small local manufacturers is that it allows me time to do R&D on sustainable product development and on how to be more sustainable as a company.
Soon we will be offering Net Zero purchases on our website and we will be a part of 1% for the Planet! Fun fact you can opt for a plastic free purchase by commenting you would like paper sleeves instead of plastic!
You may be wondering how are my products sustainable?
Great question! Let's start with my t-shirts and tanks. They are cut and sewn in a sweat-shop free factory in LA, then hand-printed by a fantastic woman owned screenprinter in CT. (She runs a eco-friendly business, cinder + salt in Middletown CT go check her out!)
For our stickers we offer both vinyl and wood sticker options. Some may ask how is a vinyl sticker sustainable?
My response is because it promotes reusable water bottles and reusable coffee mugs, I know they aren't super sustainable but they are my exception in all of the products I offer because who doesn't love stickers?!
Postcards, printed marketing materials, and business cards are printed in Rhode Island and as a paper person I love the texture options!
The business cards are made from recycled t-shirts and the mat texture has a lovely feel!
Letterpress cards have gone through a few different paper selections over the years. They are printed on a beautiful thick stock, made from sustainably harvest pulp, manufactured with no bleach or dyes, and printed using old letterpress machines. The thicker stock allows for the cards to be displayed on a desk or be framed!
I carry a few different Home Goods products, they all are hand sewn in NH by women owned businesses. The hemp home goods are the most sustainable of the home goods because hemp is a phytoremediation plant and doesn't require significant amounts of water in its production. The hemp home goods are then screenprinted by cinder + salt.
The reusable canvas bags are made of organic or recycled cotton. I especially love the two design features that make this bag unique, the 7" gusset base (i.e. it sits flat!) and the built in zipper pouch for all valuables. No more digging in the bottom of the bag for your keys or fearing you lost your wallet when your bag fell over at the beach.
Woot woot you made it through all of this! As a thank you, here is a coupon code for you!
